Who is eligible for NDIS

You will need to visit the NDIS website and answer five simple questions to discover if you are eligible to apply for the NDIS. The final decision on eligibility is determined by the NDIA (National Disability Insurance Agency).
You can also visit our page, ‘How does the NDIS work?’, for more information on the steps involved.

How do I find out if I’m eligible for the NDIS?

The first step to accessing support from the NDIS is to find out whether you are eligible. There are specific guidelines around eligibility, but for clarity, we have summarised them below:

Age

You must be between the ages of 7 & 65.

Residency

Be an Australian Citizen, or have a Permanent or Special category Visa.

Disability prerequisites

There are specific disability criteria to meet in order to be eligible for NDIS support:

  • Your disability impairs your capacity to complete specific activities like learning, mobility, communication, or self-care.
  • Your disability must be assigned to at least one neurological, intellectual, sensory or physical impairment, or related to a psychiatric condition.
  • You will need support with NDIS for the remainder of your life. You may still be eligible if your impairment varies in intensity with chronic episodes.

How does the NDIS assess eligibility?

The NDIS is not subject to a means test. These criteria are the questions used by the NDIS when assessing your eligibility for support:
Consider how you would answer these questions, including what supporting documents you have before you go to the next step, which is filling out your Access Request Form
You may be asked to provide further details of your disability at some point so be prepared with all the paperwork and documentation you may need.
