Our founder Damon Ashton started out in the healthcare industry in 1993 managing group homes for the Cerebral Palsy Alliance (formerly the Spastic Centre of NSW). He progressed to management positions within the industry but soon became frustrated with the low levels of compassion and service delivery from many providers. In 2006 Damon made the decision to change how care was being administered to our most vulnerable members of the community – People with disabilities, frail and aged and those with acquired and often lifelong injuries.
Care1 has quickly grown to employ a professional and reliable team of disability services workers and nursing staff, providing a high level of care to the community for over ten years.

Director Client Relations
Damon Ashton is the founder and Managing Director of Care1. Damon originally commenced his career in the healthcare sector while studying in 1992. Damon enjoyed long associations with The Cerebral Palsy Alliance (formerly the Spastic Centre of NSW), The Australian Quadriplegic Association and the Home Care Service of NSW. These incredible organisations introduced him to some amazing people and some great ideas that helped shape the quality company Care1 is today.
Damon has an interest in photography, was a junior surf boat champion (back in the day) and enjoys supporting the Care1 crew to ensure quality outcomes for our clients.
Jim Koumi has been involved in family run businesses over a long period and has gained an in-depth knowledge of the challenges associated with running small to medium sized enterprise.
As an Economics Alumni from Sydney University, Jim has also worked with various community-based clients covering a breadth of industries as an in-house financial and taxation consultant.
Jim was past Treasurer of Newport Junior Rugby Club, has passion for anything Rugby and Cinema anecdotes and trivia. The office folk are sure to not upset Jim, because he is the person responsible for paying employee wages.
Operations, Quality & Training Manager
Aurora has worked for Care1 since 2013, initially as a Care Coordinator, and is now filling the role of Operations, Quality & Training manager. Before coming to Care1, she worked extensively in a range of direct support roles specialising in disability, mental health and youth work, while utilising her skills as a national trainer. This combined hand-on and practical experience has laid a strong foundation for Aurora to carry out her current role of promoting quality services.
Aurora enjoys travelling, needlecraft, and spending time with her family.
HR & Training Administrator
Orla Prendergast is a Care Coordinator with Care1. Both of Orla’s parents are nurses and this has had a huge influence on her chosen career. Orla’s background is in special and additional needs teaching in Ireland where she worked with children and young adults with varying abilities and needs. Orla has worked in many areas of the disability industry, running summer camps for children with disabilities and disadvantaged backgrounds to working as a support worker with adults of varying ages, abilities and needs.
Orla is an experienced show-jumper and represented Ireland in Hickstead England. Orla enjoys spending time with family and friends and a good night out. Orla is more than happy to help out with any questions you may have and is always up for a chat.
Senior Care Coordinator
Marisa has worked in the healthcare sector for 9 years in the UK and almost a year with Care1. She spent time working in both ‘direct care’ roles supporting elderly clients with dementia in a residential setting. Marisa then went on to peruse her love for supporting people with profound learning disabilities. Since coming to Australia Marisa has honed her expertise, working as a care coordinator with Care1…and loving it.
Marisa has a passion for travel, especially to sunny spots across the globe and enjoys a good TV boxset.
